Windows Key is not working in Windows 10 [Solved]

Windows Key is one of the most used Keys on the Keyboard. Many shortcut works are done using the Windows key. This key helps in launching the start menu, shutting down, and other various operations and functions. If you find difficulties while using this key, first check if the functions you are trying to do, are working well using the mouse or other devices. If the functions are working well, such as the start menu, launch the start menu by clicking the mouse. Then, it is the problem of Windows Key. Let’s see the steps to resolve the issue Windows Key is not working in Windows 10.

1. Windows key/button is not working

First Methos: Try externernal/other Keyboard

If you are using a Laptop connect an external keyboard and check if the Windows key is working or not. If you are already using an external keyboard, connect your keyboard to another computer and check it. If you see the keyboard is working fine on another computer, it is the problem with your computer. Otherwise, replace the keyboard or repair it.

Second Method: Modify registry

Windows registry keeps the record of all key functions. If the registry is deleted or modified then this type of problem may create. You can restore the function of keys in the registry by modifying it.

Note: While modifying the registry, be cautious, because unnecessary modification can create serious problems.

Step 1: Open Task Manager, to launch the task manager right click on the taskbar and click on task manager. You can launch it by pressing CTRL + Shift + Esc key at the same time.

Step 2: From File menu go to run new task.

Step 3: Type regedit and press Enter.

Step 4: Go to the path on the left panel HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control.

Step 5: In the Control Folder go to Keyboard Layout folder and look at the right side, you will see the Scancode Map file. Right-click on the file and delete it.

You you can not find the file, jump to the next solution method.

Step 6: Now reboot your computer to reflect the effect. Check if the Windows key is working fine or not. If not, follow the next method.

Third Method : Update keyboard Drivers

This problem can be created due to the wrong Keyboard driver or outdated driver. Update the keyboard driver with the latest version.

Step 1: Type device manager at the search bar and click on the suggested result. Or press CTRL + Shift + Esc key at the same time, go to File Menu>  run new task. Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Step 2: Find Keyboard and click on Arrow on the left to expand. Now right click on the driver and select update driver > search automatically for the updated driver.

Make sure you are connected to the internet. Windows will take some time to search, download, and install.

Finally restart your computer.

2. Start Menu not working

First Method: Restart computer

If you see the start menu is not working, just restart your pc. If the problem still exists, go to the next method.

Second Method: Log out and Log in again

Step 1: Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete key at the same time and then select the Sign out option.

Step 2: If multiple user profile exists, select the one you want to log out.

Step 3: Again put password or Pin or other authentication methods to log in again.

Now check if the start menu is working or not.

Third Method: Create a new user account

Step 1: Press Windows Key + X or right-click on the start icon. Select  Windows Powershell (admin).

Step 2: In the Powershell, Windows Create a new user and password. Type the command in the same format written below.

net user username password /add

At the place of username write the user name you want to create and at the place of password you want to create on behalf of the user.

Step 3: Hit Enter, and reboot your pc. You can later change the type of user.

Fourth Method: Reinstall video and audio card drivers

Step 1: Type device manager at the search bar and click on the suggested result. Or press CTRL + Shift + Esc key at the same time, go to File Menu>  run new task. Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Step 2: Find Sound, video, and game controllers and click on the arrow on the left.

Step 3: Right-click on the sound driver and choose Uninstall and confirm it at the next confirmation Window.

Step 4: Similarly, find display adapters and expand them, then right-click on the driver listed. Choose Uninstall.

Step 5: Now reboot your computer, Windows 10 will automatically reinstall these drivers and your start menu problem will be resolved.

You can download the drivers from the manufactures’ website and install them manually.
