It likely comes down to how the brain manages effort. Evaluating uncertainty takes work — weighing probabilities, holding multiple possibilities open, tolerating not knowing. Accepting a confident statement takes almost no work at all. It’s a shortcut, and the brain loves shortcuts.

There’s also a social layer to it. Historically, hesitation in a group could read as a lack of authority, and authority mattered for survival and status.
